Rumor: NYSE-Euronext to bid for ISE?

Deutsche Bourse's bid for the International Securities Exchange underscores just how valuable exchanges are these days, especially derivatives exchanges. While breakingviews.com argues that Deutsche Bourse's bid of $2.8 billion is on the high side, it may nevertheless prompt a competing offer. The NYSE-Euronext and Nasdaq have both been open about their desires to expand in options. Attention is now turning to NYSE-Euronext. It has said in a filing that it's taking out a $3 billion credit facility "for general corporate purposes." That has led to talk that it wants to enter the fray for ISE. It would be a bold move. Recall that the NYSE and Deutsche Bourse previously sparred for Euronext, with the NYSE coming out on top.

NYSE inches closer to Euronext deal

Good news for the New York Stock Exchange: Deutsche Bourse apparently has given up on its attempts to merge with Euronext. That seems to leave the field open for the Big Board, the partner Euronext wanted all along. So it certainly seems as though the path is paved for the NYSE to become a much more global player. Deutsche Bourse announced recently it will form a partnership with Borsa Italiana. The two had originally aimed to bring Euronext into their fold, to create a mega-exchange in Europe.

NYSE remains confident of Euronext deal

A report circulated in Europe has criticized both of Euronext's potential partners: the New York Stock Exchange and Deutsche Bourse. The report, which many will argue is pandering to the European masses, suggests the pan-European Euronext should initially merge with Deutsche Bourse's stock exchange unit and only then consider talks with the Big Board. The NYSE's John Thain told reporters afterward that he remains confident the deal will be consummated. Intriguingly, he suggested the NYSE was interested in exchange companies across Europe, including Deutsche Bourse, but maybe not their other businesses, such as clearing. A report in India says that the NYSE is negotiating a deal with the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Speed bump for NYSE in Euronext bid?

It's obvious that Euronext favors a deal with the NYSE over a deal with Deutsche Bourse. But the market is having its say: Shares of the NYSE have drifted down enough and shares of Deutsche Bourse have drifted up enough that Deutsche Bourse's bid is now a bit higher. So some commentators are suggesting that the NYSE may need to bump up its bid. This isn't a sealed deal yet, by any means. And it remains to be seen if Deutsche Bourse will seize the opportunity and make a renewed push for an all-Europe deal.
