Will active ETFs storm the fund market?

It seems like we've been talking about the rise of actively managed exchange traded funds for a long time. But only now are they becoming a reality. The SEC has approved Invesco's Powershares Capital Management's actively traded ETF with some restrictions, paving the way for them to actually be sold. The issue is whether anyone one will want to buy them. Financial News Online notes that the whole idea runs counter to what made ETFs so attractive in the first place, the low cost, transparent, index-based approach. It may take some super returns, which will likely be costly, to put one of these indexes on the map.

Get ready for actively managed ETFs

It sounds like a oxymoron. An actively managed exchange-traded fund? Wasn't the point of an ETF to five customers low-cost access to passive products? PowerShares, the Invesco unit, apparently senses demand for the product and aims to launch managed ETFs next year. The term actively managed may be an overstatement. PowerShares says it will restrict fund managers of its active ETFs to three trades at the end of every week. Some have long felt there was a subtle management of some ETFs anyway. So maybe this is an acknowledgment of the practice. We'll see if the market responds. Some think they may find an audience with people who have soured on quant funds.

Crashing the private equity club?

It was only a matter of time before some one came up with an idea to let the little investor in on private equity investing. Which strikes me as a marketing concept more than anything. One example is the Listed Private Equity Plus Fund, an open ended mutual fund that requires a minimum investment of just $1,000, according to TheStreet.com. There's also the PowerShares Listed Private Equity Portfolio, an ETF based on the Red Rocks Listed Private Equity index, which includes 30 public companies. The big issue here is that people are buying into the aftermarket. They're not getting the same upside on deals that private equity firms get for their limited partners. But the marketing guys can really run with the idea. Of course, one could always buy Blackstone Group shares.
