Writedown rankings: Citigroup on top
When it comes to writedowns, Citigroup has the dubious honor of leading the pack. With its near $18 billion writedown for the fourth quarter, its writedowns now total $32 billion. According to the Financial News Online tally, that's far ahead of the No. 2 bank, UBS, which has written down $13.7 billion. Morgan Stanley comes in third with $10.6 billion, followed by Merrill Lynch at $8 billion. Merrill Lynch could well announce more this week. The industry as a whole has written of near $100 billion, a staggering sum that will only rise. But it will be hard for any bank to outdo Citigroup, which has unfortunately found a way to separate itself from its competitors. Good luck Vikram.
