As we've noted, if any bank is positioned to repay its TARP funds anytime soon, it would be Goldman Sachs. It has weathered the credit storms fairly well, and most analysts expect it to post a first-quarter profit, rebounding from its forth-quarter loss.

But will it repay the funds? It certainly wants to. But assuming the government will allow it, it's still very unclear if this would be wise. The big issue is how it would raise the funds to repay the TARP money, notes Fortune. The cost of non-government-aided debt issues are still high. No bank wants to give up cheap capital right now.
