Why the Mets deal is right for Citi

We noted not too long ago that it's hard to do business when PR issues are driving so many decisions. The decision to drop the purchase of fancy corporate jet was inescapable after the media got wind of the deal. But there were some other considerations. In the case of the marketing deal with the Mets, there's been a lot of public outcry.

Forbes is arguing that going forward with the deal is the right thing to do. At this point, Citi is still a private company, though we all assume that the government has veto authority and can force some big decisions down CEO Vikram Pandit's throat. But if the bank is going to succeed as a non-nationalized bank, it can't forget about marketing. Would less glamorous toasters make anyone feel better?
