So who will replace Phil Purcell? The chance to run a storied Wall Street investment bank would no doubt be attractive to many. The board will likely be in a position to be choosy. FORTUNE suggests that Bob Willumstad, who was a contender for the CEO job at Citigroup before Charles Prince got the nod, is a leading candidate. David Coulter, former BankAmerica CEO, may also be under consideration. Bob Diamond of Barclays Bank may be an outside contender. And then there is former Morgan Stanley president John Mack, who lost a power struggle to Purcell and left in 2001. There are some signs that he is under consideration, despite some board pronouncements to the contrary.
