Who will buy Barclay's iShares?

It was news when Barclays decided to sell its iShares unit, a pioneer in the exchange-traded funds business, to raise sorely needed cash. It has attracted a star-studded list of would-be buyers, the latest of which is Goldman Sachs, according to Reuters. Reportedly, there are some talks underway, though it may all be very preliminary.

Hellman & Friedman, Bain Capital and TPG have also shown interest, as a has mutual fund giant Vanguard. Analysts think the unit could fetch in the $4.5 billion range. Barclays, apparently mindful of the times, is offering to finance a bid.
