John Thain is out of the running. So who will be tapped as the next CEO of Citigroup? The New York Times says the only internal candidate is Vikram Pandit, the former Morgan Stanley president, who joined the company recently. Most people are betting on an outsider. Possibilities include two who were passed over previously for top jobs at the bank long ago: Robert Willumstad, Citigroup former COO and current chairman of American International Group and Richard Kovacevich, who worked at Citigroup in the mid-1980s and won wide praise for his CEO tenure at Wells Fargo. Laurence Fink may be the man rumored for every top job but ultimately passed over as people favor those with broader portfolios.
