Who is Joseph Cotchett?
You may recall Joseph Cotchett as the lawyer who earned himself a sit-down interview with Bernie Madoff by suggesting to the Ponzi scheme master that he would drop his wife Ruth from his civil suits. The interview has lead Cotchett to refocus his efforts on big banks, such as JPMorgan Chase, according to the New York Post.
This is interesting on several levels. On the one hand, a civil suit has claimed that JPMorgan pulled its own money from Madoff funds, while leaving clients invested. This could buttress that claim. On the other hand, other big banks steered clear of Madoff after their due diligence efforts. It was smaller institutions, for the most part, that really got hammered. Madoff is a canny guy, and few would be surprised if he were spinning the lawyer every which way. But then again, he may want to be spun in support of his suit.
