Where in the world is Erin Callan?
The woman who once held the mythic "Most Powerful Woman on Wall Street" title, has a new life. Erin Callan (Erin Callan news) was a veritable rock star before the crisis set in. Her promotion to CFO of Lehman Brothers (Lehman Brothers news) made her the first woman on Lehman's executive committee, which meant she was a glass ceiling breaker. "But her promotion also stunned many people. Callan lacked a background in accounting, treasury, or operations--the usual routes to the CFO position," reports Fortune. She was thrust into a role as the public face of a sinking ship, and sink she did--spectacularly.
Her tenure, while short, was powerful and people are still writing about her. The latest news is that she's "gone Garbo." While others have gone back to work, she's left the Wall Street scene. Fortune searched for her for four months and uncovered only whispers and rumors. This coincides with continuing scrutiny over Lehman's financial situation at the time of the collapse, which necessarily puts the CFO on the hot seat. The magazine finally found her, in East Hampton (Hamptons news), where she lives in an expensive house behind a gate marked "Callan." You have to wonder if she'll ever work on Wall Street again.
