Where can bankers get paid these days?
The infamous "Merrill Lynch 10," who collectively received more than $200 million in bonuses for 2008, have been rewarded with subpoenas to talk about their pay. Now, they strike many as a dying breed. There will be few, if any, bankers or executives at the biggest banks who will be making huge money anytime soon.
Bloomberg offers an interesting look an Andrea Orcel, the Merrill banker who made nearly $34 million. Given the regulatory restrictions, you have to wonder where a banker can go to get paid really well these days? We may see a surge by boutiques, which are not saddled with pay restrictions. Then again, we may see corporate America vote to keep their banking business with traditional, full-service banks. It'll be interesting to see if the deal advisory landscape really changes.
