What did Thain say about individual bonuses?
There's been a lot of posturing when it comes to New York State AG Andrew Cuomo's attempt to get to the bottom of the Merrill Lynch bonus brou-ha-ha. We may get a bit more clarity from John Thain soon. A New York Supreme Court ruling cleared the way for Thain to directly answer questions, on Tuesday, about bonuses granted to the top executives, reports the AP.
Thain had already discussed bonuses granted to the less-senior execs. Thain's camp maintains that he has no problem discussing the issue, but wanted to make sure it was alright legally, given that Bank of America had asked him not to discuss the bonuses. The big issue still seems to be the level of involvement by Bank of America executives. Thain has testified that the bank was quite involved. Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis has said otherwise. Cuomo is scheduled to talk to Lewis as well.
