Wells Fargo to issue cards to people without SSNs?

When Bank of America announced that it would give credit cards to qualified customers even if they lack a social security number, we wondered if any big banks would follow suit--despite the outcry from opponents. Well, it looks like Wells Fargo is considering just that. It has a decent history of serving some minority markets. In May 2001, it became the first bank to honor the Matricula Consular, basically a Mexican government-issued ID card, as valid identification for accounts. It has since opened more than 1 million accounts using the Matricula card. Recently, the bank started a Spanish-language financial literacy effort that encourages people to buy homes. It would seem natural, and it is not surprising that other executives say they are considering the move.
