Wal-Mart and banking, the issues
In April, banking regulators will hold hearings in Washington, D.C., and Kansas City, MO, about Wal-Mart's application for a narrow bank charter. The issues have become clouded recently. Wal-Mart now says it no longer plans to operate a real bank soon. Instead, it is merely renting space to banks, which are then opening branches inside. But the issues that attend this issue are worth looking at. Some believe that by injecting some fresh competition into the industry, consumers will be better off.
