Samuel Israel riveted the industry for a few weeks. He got more coverage for faking his suicide and going on the run--on the day he was supposed to begin a long prison term--than for the massive hedge fund fraud for which he was convicted. But in the end, his saga ended anti-climactically. USA Today reports "he tried to surrender in Granville, MA, but the police station was closed, so Israel rode his Yamaha scooter to the nearby town of Southwick, MA." He told someone there he was a fugitive who wanted to turn himself in. They checked his name in a computer and took him into custody. Apparently, his mom may have helped out. He had been in touch with her before he gave himself up. Other convicted white-collar criminals may suffer if they're seen as more of a flight risk these days. Not that prison payback is likely. Meanwhile, his girlfriend who helped him faces 10 years in jail.
