Time for Ken Lewis to step down?
Not so long ago, Bank of America CEO Ken Lewis was being hailed as the Banker of the Year. To some, that now seems like a punch line. We're starting to hear a lot more grumbling, and some are openly calling for the board to fire him.
According to Breakingviews, "Incessant dealmaking...had made the bank a repository for all manner of toxic assets. For this and the lack of candor over the Merrill Lynch mess, Bank of America's directors must show Lewis the door." The Merrill Lynch issue has put Ken Lewis in a bad light--as bad as the light on John Thain. When all is said and done, Lewis must accept responsibility for the big losses. Making it sound like he was blindsided makes the bank look incompetent. We always said, he staked his career to the Merrill Lynch deal.
