Texas has emerged as a must-own destination for top banks: JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo and Bank of America have established themselves there. Citigroup and Wachovia have been making moves. Foreign banks have also been angling for more market share. But all the headlines about the big names masks a lot of dynamism going on at the local bank level. Comerica, with sizable presences in Texas and California, aims to move its headquarters to Dallas. Guaranty Bank, Prosperity Bancshares and other independents are making it known that they intend to be competitive. Of course, valuations are really soaring. Now you could argue that this is going on all over the country, especially in high-growth states. But everything is bigger in Texas, as they say.
