TARP payback blitz in the offing?

Goldman Sachs may be aiming to pay back its $10 billion in TARP funds as early as April. Will that open the floodgates? Perhaps it will at least partially. What we may see is a separation between healthy banks and not-so-healthy banks. Not all banks are in a position to repay the funds.

A lot will be determined by the on-going stress tests of about 20 of the largest banks. If they pass with flying colors, some banks may be prompted to follow Goldman's lead. Bank of America's Ken Lewis has just said that he also would like to at least start paying back the $45 billion it took. Right now, all banks will say as much, but certainly not all will be able to. A lot is riding on the stress tests. Goldman Sachs may end up being more of an exception.
