State of independent research muddled
Independent research outfits had their heyday in the aftermath of the tainted sell-side research scandal. The settlement actually mandated that firms buy and distribute such research. But the Gradient scandal seems to suggest that research by third-party firms is not necessarily conflict-free. No matter how all this is finally resolved, it does appear that third-party research has made much headway. Meanwhile, sell-side research seems to have improved a bit.
