Ruth and Bernie Madoff were married for 50 years. They were inseparable, even working in the same office. So the question has arose: How much did she know about his epic Ponzi scheme? The official word is that she learned about the fraud at the same time her family did. But the New York Times writes: "Was Mrs. Madoff really blindsided? In the social circles where the couple once traveled, both possibilities are unnerving--that Ruth Madoff was in on this, or that she wasn't."

Some are skeptical that Ruth did not know anything, or that she didn't harbor any suspicions. But it doesn't look like she's a target of investigators. Unlike her husband, she is free to enter and exit their Upper East Side penthouse. But her world and her family have been rocked. We can all sympathize with that. I'm sure it is falling on her to keep the family together, if that is possible.
