He was the analyst who had time for everyone--and it paid off for him. Richard Bove's face was everywhere during the financial crisis, offering terrific instant analysis that endeared him to the press. But now he tells the New York Post he will scale back his media activities, mainly his TV appearances. Bove will also reduce the press distribution of his research into banks, brokerages and investment firms.

The issue seems to be clients of little-known Rochdale Securities, who were wondering if he had become too famous. Some also wondered if his research was getting to the media before it was getting to them, even though they were paying for it. All those media appearances also took up a lot of time.

The move to scale back, Bove said, was decided by Rochdale President over a dinner recently. Bove has been good for the firm; he certainly boosted its public profile. But that may now be outweighed by client concerns. Bove's office has revealed he will conduct interviews only by phone.

You have to wonder if this really sits well with him. Some guys love the media work; they were made to be on TV. Bove might have been one of those guys. He just might miss it.
