Pandit's star shines, as his hedge fund flags
As of now, Vikram Pandit presumably sits atop a short list of Citigroup CEO candidates. One blight on his list of qualifications might be unexpectedly poor performance of his hedge fund firm, Old Lane Partners, since Citigroup bought it for $800 million in April. The firm was meant to be the foundation of Citigroup's renewed push into alternative investments. Financial News Online reports Old Lane's returns for the year are now around 3 percent, which lags the industry average of 10 percent. Old Lane's internal goal is in the 10-15 percent range. Citigroup has apparently ceased marketing the fund. Some think Pandit has been distracted. There is even talk that some investors will pull funds if Pandit is named Citigroup CEO. It's unclear to what extent this is an issue for the Citigroup board. Stay tuned. Â
