If things go well for Vikram Pandit, you would have to assume he will one day rule Citigroup. But it must be said that some were surprised when Pandit chose to accept Charles Prince's offer to run a new unit that includes markets and banking and alternative investments. After all, he had already done the big bank thing. Financial News Online notes he had a "glittering 22-year career" at Morgan Stanley before he left to form a hedge fund company. But the challenge has proven to be alluring enough. He is described as a more technically brilliant quantitative type than a people person. This will really exercise his managerial chops, if he has any. A big test, if you will, to see if he can run the entire company.
