New York City, a mini Silicon Valley?

New York City is still the country's financial capital, but more people are also seeing it as something of a technology center, one that rivals Boston as the Silicon Valley of the East. These days, there are plenty of reasons to conclude that the city is living up to the hype.

TheDeal.com says, "The New York tech scene shows signs of a real recovery from the post-dot-com-bubble blues. Initiatives and networking have sprung up. And with Wall Street hunkering down, lots of engineering talent has suddenly become available to nurture New York digital start-ups."

There have indeed been plenty of IT folks who were forced to explore new opportunities by the financial crisis. Financial start-ups have long been poaching from Wall Street, but the skills apply broadly and as long as the big boys of finance are hiring tepidly, more talent will be available for the start-ups. That said, hiring in financial IT seems ready to pop. It may be a great time to be a talented engineer.
