New punch line: Investment banker
They were once masters of the universe. Now they're unemployed--and not getting a lot of sympathy. Rightly or wrongly, investment bankers have become a symbol of all that is wrong with the economy.
The New York Times notes a cartoon in The Record, of Bergen County, N.J., showing rats fleeing a sinking ship labeled "Wall Street," with treasure chests held aloft called "CEO" and "Bonus." On "The Daily Show," Jon Stewart made fun of Merrill Lynch honcho John Thain's decision to pay out bonuses as the ship was sinking. "Do you live in Bizarro World?" The reality is that Wall Street will still attract bright people. The money is just too good. But hopefully, more of the brightest kids will again want to become doctors and engineers.
