Nasdaq vs. NYSE, another round
The Nasdaq vs. NYSE battle on the domestic front is raging. The Nasdaq hasn't been shy about some recent milestones. According to Financial News Online, the exchange's market share hit 20 percent last week, a new record for the exchange. That compares with 12 percent at this time last year. Recently, Nasdaq has been carving out more share of total volume. Recently, it has accounted for about 30 percent of all equity trading volume and that might go up from there. Of course by dint of its deal with Euronext, the NYSE remains the larger exchange. So domestically, the Nasdaq has fared well in NYSE-listed stocks but less well when it comes to its own stocks; it faces lots of upstarts. It remains to be seen how its new Portal service for private securities will pan out. The domestic news has been overshadowed as of late by the focus on international expansion. Everyone is waiting for a blockbuster domestic deal by the NYSE, and possibly the Nasdaq, so stay tuned.
