Mortgage companies give more to politicians

With so much on the line from a regulatory perspective, the big mortgage companies and servicers have started to play the Washington game. They are stepping up their contributions and will no doubt expect results as sensitive negotiations about regulations and settlements continue.

These companies are seeking friends in high place, and you cannot blame them. According to the Center for Public Integrity, four of the five companies under scrutiny--Bank of America, JP Morgan, Wells Fargo and Citigroup--"are major donors for state and federal political campaigns. Between them, they have donated at least $8 million since the start of 2009 to candidates, party committees and other political action committees. Ally Financial hasn't given money during that period to campaigns under its current name or is previous name, General Motors Acceptance Corp., or GMAC."

For the most part, the banks are spreading their wealth, though it seems as if Republicans have received just a bit more than Democrats. Bank of America seems to be leading the pack, giving $3.2 million to candidates, party committees and other PACs since 2009. JP Morgan Chase is not far behind at $2.8 million. Wells Fargo gave about $1 million.
