Here's how you want to get hired: Have the hirer buy your company for up to $800 million and then install in a job that gives you a shot at running the whole show someday. That is the good fortune that is falling on Vikram Pandit, the erstwhile Morgan Stanley executive who quit to start his own hedge fund, Old Lane. The word is that Citigroup's Charles Prince really wants him to join the executive teams as head of alternative investments--a crucial area of growth. The unit has been absent a full-time chief for more than a year. Pandit, who is said to be mulling the offer, would become the third recent executive hire, which sets up a horse race of sorts for the right to succeed Charles Prince. See the next item.
