Madoff's accomplices on the hot seat?
Investigators seem to be aggressively pursuing the truth when it comes to the Bernard Madoff scandal. Fortune raises a good question: What happens to the many middlemen, what it calls "conduits," that placed so much money with Madoff for a fat fee? There are a gamut of possibilities from full-on prosecution as an accomplice to "willful blindness."
It's fair to wonder just how "involved" some of them were. The key here is what Madoff himself says. If he's really cooperating with authorities, we may get some indication of their level of knowledge. In any case, you can expect a flow of civil litigation. They will not emerge unscathed, and some might end up in prison.
