Madoff sons: We're victims, too

Andrew and Mark Madoff, sons of Bernard (Bernard Madoff news), have gone to court to ask that millions of dollars in financial claims against them be thrown out because they, too, were victims of their father's crimes, a point they've stuck to from the beginning.

In a filing at a bankruptcy court in Manhattan, their lawyer pounded home the point that the two brothers were responsible for revealing their father's "massive betrayal" to the authorities when their father confessed to them. But that fact has never really persuaded the many victims that family members, including Bernard's wife Ruth, were not complicit in the crimes.

Recall that trustee Irving Picard has sued Andrew, 43, Mark, 45, and niece, Shana, for $200 million, claiming they were "completely derelict" in their duties at the firm and that they withdrew large sums of money from the firm to finance their lavish lifestyles. Between 2001 and 2008, both earned roughly $30 million from Madoff Investment Securities. Mark's wife is seeking to change her and her kids' surname.
