Law firms cash in on hedge fund activism

We're seeing a surge in hedge fund activism and that translates into more proxy fights by people not named Carl Icahn. For some, this recalls the 1980s, notably top law firms. They are cashing in. Firms that advise funds, such as Schulte Roth & Zabel and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, are seeing a surge in business, as are firms that defend management. Increasingly, hedge funds are emerging as top clients, powering growth at firms like Willkie Farr & Gallagher, where Barry  Barbash (formerly of the Securities and Exchange Commission) has staked a claim to the market. SAC Capital Advisors is a client. Other firms are scrambling to get a piece of 9,000 fund industry. So if you've got some hedge fund expertise, the headhunters will likely find you.
