The KKR-TXU deal in retrospect
The Blackstone Group may want to pay attention to this: Kohlberg Kravis Robert's ability to ink the TXU deal, in the worst of times, stems in large part from its ability to work with the many detractors of TXU. Looking back on the deal, Investment Dealers' Digest notes that KKR and partner TPG pow-wowed with the World Wildlife Fund and Environmental Defense even before a deal was officially struck. Eventually, a bit after the mega-deal was announced, a deal was forged that pared TXU's plans for 11 new power plants to 3. That meant the elimination of 56 million tons of annual carbon emissions. The agreement resulted in a deal blessed by several environmental groups, including the Environmental Defense Fund.
