KKR looks to sign up more co-investors
Kohlberg Kravis Roberts is reportedly building out a syndicated deal team, aiming to offer more co-investment opportunities for its preferred investors. While the idea is all together new, it makes a lot of sense at the moment. Certainly, investors would like the idea of making a bit more on specific deals. It also allows buyout firms to go it alone, instead of relying on club deals, which regulators seem to be wary of. Also, co-investors can help reduce the amount of debt involved, and there may be some additional fee opportunities. So to get the really big deals done, this approach can really help. Other firms will likely follow suit. But for now KKR is the pioneer; it needs the added fuel if it wants to maintain its pace. The danger of course is if the deal doesn't fare well, but those are risks the investor will have to live with.
