Ken Lewis: Are his days as CEO numbered?
It seems like we've been asking this question for the longest time: Can Ken Lewis survive at the top of Bank of America? When it comes to the chairman title, the answer was an emphatic, "No." Shareholders stripped him of that title at the last annual meeting.
Business Week raises the issue again regarding his CEO title. Apparently, some people close to the board are convinced that top politicians want Lewis out. It's not exactly clear why. Maybe it's payback for making the Fed and then the Treasury Secretary look bad over the Merrill Lynch "stay quiet" brou ha ha? Is it general ineptitude? Perhaps it doesn't matter. While the board--led by one-time CEO Hugh L. McColl Jr., C.D. Spangler Jr., and O. Temple Sloan Jr.--are voicing support, they are also making some transition plans, according to the article. It will soon create a list of possible successors. Quarterly results could aid Lewis's bid to stay. But you get the feeling a transition is in the works.
