How long can Vikram Pandit last?

The conventional wisdom on Wall Street, fairly or not, is that Vikram Pandit's days as CEO are numbered. This has been the case for several months now. But the surprise move to sell a 51 percent stake in Smith Barney and the move to focus on two markets seems to undercut Pandit, who was a universal banking supporter, notes CNBC.

Not so long ago he refused to break up Citi. But that is exactly what seems to be going on, and it has people confused about not only his vision but whether his vision matters at the company. Some think the government is calling the real shots. To be fair, he had an almost impossible job. He inherited some huge problems and the intense media scrutiny certainly didn't help.
