How badly are bank brands suffering?

According to J.D. Power's latest survey of consumers, the biggest two banks took the biggest hits when it comes to customer satisfaction: Bank of America and Citigroup. Banks that did well include Wells Fargo, Wachovia, Arkansas' Arvest Bank, Bank of the West, Missouri's Commerce Bank, Harris Bank, People's United Bank and TD Bank.

There's been talk recently that the on-going crunch presents a marketing opportunity for smaller banks. Only 35 percent of customers polled said they are highly committed to their retail banks, down from 37 percent in 2008 and 41 percent in 2007, notes Reuters. Customers with high deposits have the least commitment to retail banks. Rising fees seem to be the main bugaboo.
