The great success, so far anyway, of the Fortress Group initial public offering, and the upcoming Blackstone Group offering, has given way to lots of chatter about the next alternative investment firm to go public. Frankly, despite the conventional wisdom, there really aren't that many that could really sustain an offering. Fortune reports that Avenue Capital, Perry Capital and the Citadel Investment Group are said to be the most likely to file. Each manages more than $10 billion in assets. Avenue and Perry have recently moved into private equity and real estate. Avenue Capital's founder Marc Lasry has perhaps been the most inclined to make the move. He is the type of manager that Wall Street would bet on. We'll see how this all plays out. Some big private equity type firms may also be in the hunt.
