Goldman's Abby Joseph Cohen returns to spotlight
Abby Joseph Cohen was once the public face of Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS). During the big bull of the 1990s, the then-chief strategist was a near-ubiquitous presence on the airwaves and in the media.
Her star status was always accompanied by a certain chuckling, as she was considered a frumpy staid sort, an image the top executives at the firm were apparently happy with. But then Choen disappeared, as she was replaced by someone she hired and trained. She says supported the move fully.
But now, at a time when Goldman's image has taken some hits, the upright, no-nonsense Cohen is back in the media, as the subject of a Q&A in a popular New York Times Magazine column. She fielded some tough questions, about the lack of women at Goldman Sachs, Facebook (she couldn't say anything), the large compensation for top Wall Street executives, what bank executives contribute to society, the economic meltdown, and more.
She handled it all pretty well, as one would expect from an old media hand. Will we be seeing more of Cohen, as perhaps a return-to-tradition media relations strategy? It certainly couldn't hurt.
