The news that Goldman Sachs has just added Lakshmi Mittal--the corporate magnate and richest Asian on the planet--has prompted some praise from Breakingviews. The first new director at Goldman Sachs since Lord Browne stepped down, Mittal brings a wealth of global experience to the table and to the three committees he's joining: audit, compensation, and nominating and corporate governance. You have to wonder if any one person can really make a difference being on three critical boards. It comes off almost like hazing of the new guy. Breakingviews has some advice for Goldman Sachs as well, like beefing up its stable of financial-expert directors and perhaps paring down the board to boost accountability. In general, now might be a good time to focus on risk management.
