Is Goldman Sachs partner still the epitome?

The announcement of Goldman Sachs "partner managing directors," who are named every two years, was delayed a bit this year. But this list is now out; 94 people have made the cut, bringing the total to about 443. Reuters notes that the number of new partners is down a bit from the 115 who were tapped in 2006. This is undoubtedly an honor. As a group, these partner managing directors (the term is a nod to the firm's partnership roots) share about 20 percent of the firm's compensation pool. But you have to wonder, are the new partners reaching the top just as Goldman Sachs begins an inevitable decline? The value of a partnership will surely diminish, as profits turn down. The Goldman partner track may have lost its luster, a given with the rise of private equity and hedge funds. Still, this may accelerate it somewhat. But hey, no matter what, this is quite an achievement.
