Goldman Sachs now leaning toward Republicans

Goldman Sachs, (NYSE: GS) as many of you know, has long been a Democrat-leaning institution. But the recent regulatory and enforcement battles in the President Obama era may have led to a subtle shift.

Data from the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP) shows Goldman Sachs has given more money to Republicans than Democrats for the first time since it began keeping records in 1990, notes TheStreet.com.

For this election, Goldman has given roughly $914,000 to Republican candidates compared with $776,000 to Democrats. During the prior 20 years, over 11 election cycles, Goldman gave nearly $21 million to Democrats, compared with $12 million to Republicans, reports TheStreet.com.

Goldman remains the top giver among the large Wall Street banks--investment banks and commercial banks. This isn't necessarily surprising.

As for the industry, SIFMA's campaign giving showed increasing support for Democrats, though overall giving is down--even though Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, of the Senate Finance Committee, got the biggest check from SIFMA, $6,500.

This might not mean much as political giving at the corporate level is often about backing winners that can help you later. Party affiliation isn't a huge issue.
