Goldman Sachs' Fabrice "Fab" Tourre: Hero or villain?
In the immediate aftermath at Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS), the media was unsure what to make of Fabrice "Fab" Tourre, whose zesty emails got so much play, to his chagrin. One Washington Post columnist, surely in the heat of the moment, said he was "fast becoming the poster boy of the financial crisis, a Michael Milken for the current times." That's a bit of a stretch, of course. Other media outlets have made him out to be a sympathetic figure, who at one point seemed to be in danger of being thrown under the Congressional bus by his superiors.
Newsweek calls him "an unlikely folk hero" on Wall Street. Two Facebook pages have been set up. Wall Streeters were happy to tell the reporter that Tourre embodies what they are striving for. "For these young Wall Street types, Tourre embodies the culture of the financial world and offers a road map for success." Which is either good news or bad news. So what do you think? Hero or villain? Or mere scapegoat and sideshow?
