Goldman Sachs' "dumbest moment" distinction
Fortune has put together its annual list of the dumbest moments--"the business world's bonehead plays"--in business for 2009. The No. 1 item features none other than Lloyd Blankfein and Goldman Sachs (GS). Which qualifies as yet another PR hit. "Simple common sense still seems to elude the bright minds of Wall Street. Or at least, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein...Last month, however, he got a bit carried away, telling a Times of London reporter that he was just a banker 'doing God's work.' For $43 million a year."
I maintained all along that he was merely joking, but the quote earned the bank a fresh round of notoriety. I think we'll see the bank pull it together from a PR point of view soon. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a massive campaign brewing. I'm sure they could place an article about Goldman Sachs employees who do great things in their community.
