Goldman Sachs code theft to end with a whimper?

Reuters reports that federal prosecutors may be in negotiations to settle the Sergey Aleynikov case. Recall he was the Goldman Sachs programmer who was accused of stealing proprietary code, which led to massive coverage of high frequency trading and the value of algorithms. 

The article suggests that prosecutors want the case to go away. There's not much evidence that the ex-programmer shared the code with his new employer, and some "have suggested it almost appeared like federal prosecutors were doing the bidding of Goldman."

In hindsight, it might have been better for the prosecution if this hadn't turned into a media circus. But these days, anything involving Goldman Sachs is bound to draw attention. We'll have to see what kind of evidence the prosecutors have.
