Goldman Sachs is without a doubt a powerhouse in the private equity, perhaps to the chagrin of top private equity firms. But it is not going away, and all would be wise to play well with the firm. GS Capital Partners VI closed with about $20 billion in commitments, breaking previous fundraising records. The new fund is a little less than the combined value of the five previous funds. Institutions and high net worth clients contributed $11 billion. The company and employees contributed the balance. The fund exceed Goldman Sachs' expectations. Early on, it aimed for a $12 billion fund, then a $15 billion fund. And on to $20 billion. This is impressive but the other top firms are faring just as well. I think it is only a matter for time before we see some interesting battles, as targets dwindle.
