Goldman Sachs, another Drexel Burnham Lambert?

In the heat of the moment, we have heard a good bit of hyperbole regarding Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS). One Washington Post columnist likened Fabrice Tourre, the only employee named in the Goldman Sachs civil complaint, to Michael Milken--which is a laughable stretch.

TheStreet.com offers an interesting commentary noting some parallels in how the Drexel drama unfolded back in 1988 and how the Goldman saga is unfolding now. Drexel was also initially targeted by the SEC (SEC news), and the SEC back then tried to surprise the target by trying to file its complaint without a specific heads up. It was big news as Drexel responded to the SEC's charges with an eye on beefing up its image. But the real Drexel drama played out once criminal charges were filed. Rudy Giuliani arrived on stage and the rest is history. The parallels will be a lot more compelling if the U.S. Attorney for the southern district ever decides to file charges. I still think that is unlikely to happen.
