Goldman Sachs annual meeting ends with a whimper, no bangs
Evelyn Y. Davis made her presence known at the Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) annual meeting, which was held Friday in Jersey City, N.J. But she struck a conciliatory tone. She told the CEO: "I want people to know I have nothing against you personally. And you are not a bad looking guy,"according to the New York Times' live blog of the event.
She then gave Blankfein a copy of her newsletter Highlights and Lowlights, a nod apparently to the news that Goldman Sachs had cancelled its subscription. At another point, she yelled out to the audience that she sometimes calls Lloyd Blankfein, "Lord Goldmine."
All in all, not even Davis could generate much controversy, though some issues on pay were raised. The directors were re-elected with a more than 90 percent of the vote. And none of the shareholder proposals opposed by management passed.
So what to make of this? It may be that the public anger of Goldman Sachs truly has crested. There were no newsworthy protests at the meeting, no righteous anger. Even with the news that at least one Senator thinks Blankfein was not entirely truthful in a hearing and with the Justice Department looking into the firm's CDS practices, there was little venting and a lot more praising than in past years.
This is yet more evidence that the firm has put the financial crisis behind it from a customer and shareholder point of view.
