Is Goldman Sachs aiming to unmask @GSelevator Tweeter?

The gossip vine holds that Goldman Sachs has launched an internal probe to find out who's behind the @GSelevator gossip Twitter account.

We noted recently that someone purporting to be a Goldman Sachs banker who hasn't had as much work to do in the market-related lull has set up @GSElevator to Tweet things he hears riding the elevator at the gilded bank. In a somewhat brazen interview with the New York Times, he claimed to know Lloyd Blankfein's cell phone and home phone numbers. That would appear to narrow down the list of possibilities.

The New York Post's Page Six reports that a source tells it "the firm is taking a look at the issue and has gone so far as to ask Twitter to freeze the account (to no avail).

"They believe it is an intern or a young gun, but there are enough facts on the feed for bosses to suspect it is someone with access inside the company. The culprit may just be riding elevators, but that is caught on camera."

It may be that this is all a hoax. If the firm has reason to believe that the Tweeter is real, my guess is that it will spare no expense in tracking him down. If this person is real, the firm cannot let him go on embarrassing it. Most likely, however, this is a hoax.
