Fieldpoint, a small bank for rich people
What do a bunch of grumpy old Wall Street guys do once they retire? They get together and decide to open a small bank that caters to wealthy folks who are convinced they aren't getting the kind of service they deserve from traditional private bankers, like Goldman Sachs.
Fieldpoint Private Bank & Trust was birthed in 2008 by some very big names, many of them associated with Merrill Lynch. No fewer than three Merrill Lynch former CEOs are founders: William Schreyer, Daniel Tully, and David Komansky. Others, according to Fortune, include James Kilts, former CEO of Gillette; Jerome Kohlberg, of KKR fame; and Kenneth Langone, the investment banker.
This might seem like rich guys, probably bad golfers, with not much to do in retirement. But they think they're onto something. The bank has grown quickly and will likely soon be positive. The differentiator in the minds of the founders is good service, an end to the days when even the wealthy couldn't get a real person on the phone at their banks. Fieldpoint's private bankers give their cell phone numbers to their customers and say they'll take a call 24/7. We'll see where this goes. The company aims to expand quickly.
