There isn't a more riveting takeover battle going than the one for Dow Jones. With the Wall Street Journal as the prize, it affects just about everyone in the industry. Which makes the Fortune article on the Bancroft family all the more engaging. Clearly, Rupert Murdoch has a lot of ammunition to use with shareholders not named Bancroft. The dividends, which exceeds profits at times, paid to the family are shocking in some ways. Unsurprisingly, the family was locked in a bitter now settled battle, pitting Bancroft against the third husband of Jacqueline Spencer Morgan, who married Hugh Bancroft Jr. in 1948. But you have to think that the bid is galvanizing, even dividing, the 30 or so family members. Dividends may be imperiled.
